Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood Watch is a voluntary program that partners Ada County Sheriff's Office and our subdivision to provide additional security and a safer environment for our subdivision.

The meetings must cover the following topics: The purpose and operation of the Neighborhood watch program. Neighborhood concerns and methods of addressing these concerns. Crime reporting and operation identification. Home security.

Neighborhood Watch Responsibilities and Expectations

Neighbors' Responsibilities:

  1. Watch out for each other's property.
  2. Report any suspicious activity to the Sheriff's Office.
  3. Know the three neighbors across the street from your home, on each side and the three neighbors behind you.
  4. Have an increased awareness for your neighbors' safety and report suspicious activity to the police
Block Captain Responsibilities:
  1. Pass on information received from area coordinator to neighborhood homes.
  2. Meet with neighbors on a semi-annual basis (a Community Resource Officer can make presentations at these meetings or you might have a Block Party).
  3. Distribute Home Security Manuals to each of the neighbors and collect money for the Neighborhood Watch Signs.
  4. Maintain, update and distribute New Neighbor Packets. New Neighbor Packets should contain a cover letter, neighborhood phone and/or email list, and various pamphlets.
  5. Notify Area Coordinator if no longer able to perform Block Captain Duties.

Neighborhood Watch Update

I would like to thank everyone for your warm welcome when I began as Neighborhood Watch Chairman in September.

I have been working with Myrna Harris, who is the Ada County Community Resource Officer for Neighborhood Watch, and she has given me some guidelines for structuring our Neighborhood Watch Program. We are a large neighborhood, and we are in need of many volunteers to make this program successful. I know many of you have expressed an interest in being active with the program, so I need to let you know that I am looking to fill the following positions:

  • South Side Chairman
  • 7 Block Captains for the South Side (Please call me to see if your street is in need of a Block Captain)
  • Telephone Network System Designer/Coordinator
  • 12 Block Captains for the North Side (we currently have 2)
I am currently the North Side Chairman, and as you can see, there is a great need for more volunteers. The roll of "Block Captain" is a small leadership position. There are only a few things a Block Captain is asked to organize. This is a very simple way you can help your neighborhood watch program.

REPORTING SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

Part of having a successful Neighborhood Watch is to report all Suspicious Activity to the Police immediately. Many people think that the Police do not want to be bothered for petty situations but sometimes those small disturbance calls have helped them solve big cases. For example, the occupants of a speeding car that just left the area may also have just vandalized several mailboxes or broke into a house. Whatever the situation by calling immediately, this initiates the Police response and in all calls for service response time is very important.

Over the last 3 months there has been a south side burglary, a vehicle ran through the south side park fence, park graffiti and a truck driving in the south side park; report any suspicious people, activity, or vehicles to the Sheriff's Office at 377-6790.

In the last six months over $2900 has been spent to repair damage to common area grounds and equipment due to vandalism.

Thank you for all that you do to help with our Neighborhood Watch Program.
